In classical DSC instruments the sample cannot be observed during the measurement. However sometimes observation can give further useful information such as the formation of bubbles, fumes or a change of color. For some research projects or material characterizations, it can be crucial to know the color of the sample, e.g. production of colored polymers or paints, during and after the manufacturing or forming process, or to know if the sample creates gas, foam or bubbles within a reactor. Using the Chip DSC 10 with photo and video option, all information can be recorded within the DSC run, without need of any other instrument or technique.
The graphic above shows an example of a thermochromic material, showing an endothermic phase transition between 150 and 160°C (blue curve). The sample is an inorganic quicksilver complex, that can be used as catalyst. By DSC, the exact temperature and enthalpy of the phase transition can be easily determined. The phases have different colors and the color change from red to yellow can be seen through the transparent cover. The effect of changing the color depending in temperature is called “thermochromism” and is usually a reversible effect.
