Transition de phase

Si un composé change d’état pendant la montée ou la baisse de la température, ou si un solide change de structure (cristalline), ce phénomène est appelé transition de phase.

L’exemple le plus simple d’une transition de phase est la fusion ou la cristallisation. Tous ces processus peuvent être facilement surveillés par DSC car ils ont toujours lieu en libérant de l’énergie (exothermique) ou en consommant de l’énergie (endothermique) de l’environnement sous forme de changements de température.

La DSC mesure ces changements de température à l’aide d’un (ou plusieurs) thermocouple fixé au porte-échantillon et permet de comparer la température exacte de l’échantillon à la température de l’environnement ainsi qu’à un échantillon de référence. La différence entre référence et échantillon peut indiquer, en cas de processus endothermique ou exothermique, en fonction du signe algébrique de la valeur énergétique résultante.

La position exacte d’un effet si la température est surveillée indique en outre de manière très précise son déroulement. La précision de la mesure de la température de l’échantillon détermine la résolution et la sensibilité de l’ensemble de l’expérience DSC.
