Nas f\u00f3rmulas correspondentes, o valor de m\u00e9rito \u00e9 designado por &#8220;ZT&#8221;.  <\/p><p>Uma diferen\u00e7a de temperatura nas extremidades de um condutor el\u00e9trico provoca uma tens\u00e3o el\u00e9ctrica nesse condutor. Esta rela\u00e7\u00e3o foi descrita pela primeira vez por Thomas Johann Seebeck. Por isso, \u00e9 conhecida como o efeito Seebeck. Os processos s\u00e3o revers\u00edveis. <\/p><p>O processo inverso, em que as diferen\u00e7as de temperatura s\u00e3o geradas por diferen\u00e7as de tens\u00e3o, \u00e9 o <strong>efeito Peltier<\/strong>. \u00c9 utilizado, por exemplo, para arrefecimento em microeletr\u00f3nica e nanotecnologia. <\/p><p>O valor de m\u00e9rito ZT n\u00e3o tem dimens\u00e3o. Aumenta com o quadrado do coeficiente de Seebeck, com a temperatura m\u00e9dia absoluta de funcionamento e com a condutividade el\u00e9ctrica. Diminui com a condutividade t\u00e9rmica espec\u00edfica.
