(PPS)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ec24aa1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ec24aa1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS)<\/strong> is a partially aromatic, semi-crystalline polymer with a unique structure of benzene rings linked by sulfur atoms (Aoki et al., 2023). This special molecular architecture gives the material extraordinary properties that make it one of the most important high-performance plastics in modern industry. <\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linseis.com\/en\/wiki\/crystallization-and-recrystallization-of-polymers\/\"><strong>crystallinity<\/strong> <\/a>of PPS plays a decisive role in its performance. Typical degrees of crystallinity are between 30-50%, depending on processing, fillers and additives (Aoki et al., 2023). This crystalline structure is significantly influenced by the cooling rate after processing:  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28f007d elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"28f007d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a816f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7a816f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>Slow cooling leads to higher crystallinity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linseis.com\/en\/wiki\/crystallization-and-recrystallization-of-polymers\/\" data-auto-event-observed=\"true\"><strong>crystallinity<\/strong> <\/a>with increased stiffness and modulus of elasticity<\/li>\n<li>Rapid cooling increases ductility and changes fracture behavior<\/li>\n<li>The crystallinity directly determines the mechanical and thermal properties<\/li>\n<li>Higher crystallinity results in improved heat resistance and greater&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linseis.com\/en\/wiki\/measurement-of-thermal-stability\/\" data-auto-event-observed=\"true\"><strong>thermal stability<\/strong><br><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d00599 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"9d00599\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c10379 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2c10379\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>PPS has a high <strong>melting point of around 280-285 \u00b0C<\/strong>, making it suitable for applications where high temperatures can occur in the short term (SpecialChem, 2024). The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linseis.com\/en\/wiki\/glass-transition-temperature\/\">glass transition temperature<\/a> is around 85-88 \u00b0C<\/strong> (Aoki et al., 2023). This range means that PPS is hard and dimensionally stable at room temperature, but becomes increasingly elastic above the glass transition temperature. Depending on the application, this can be both advantageous and limiting: PPS is less suitable for components that are permanently in contact with hot media &#8211; such as water or steam &#8211; while it proves its worth in electrical, mechanical and chemically stressed environments thanks to its high dimensional stability and thermal resistance.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9255b84 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9255b84\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Thermal stability and temperature resistance<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84366e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"84366e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linseis.com\/en\/wiki\/measurement-of-thermal-stability\/\">\n  <strong>thermal stability<\/strong>\n<\/a> of PPS is one of its most important unique selling points and makes it a preferred material for high-temperature applications. PPS remains structurally and mechanically stable up to 220-240 \u00b0C in continuous operation, while short-term loads of up to 260-280 \u00b0C can be withstood without damage (Aoki et al., 2023). <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af00c00 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"af00c00\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0634e82 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0634e82\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The excellent temperature resistance offers several decisive advantages:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-171ebb0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"171ebb0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Long-term load capacity over many thousands of hours at temperatures up to 230 \u00b0C without significant deterioration in properties<\/li><li>Dimensional stability due to low thermal expansion and high dimensional stability<\/li><li>Less material fatigue thanks to high thermal ageing stability<\/li><li>Minimized risk of embrittlement, cracking or creep over the life cycle<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ab4bf4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"5ab4bf4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d5d8bb1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d5d8bb1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The material only begins to decompose at around 490 \u00b0C, which offers an enormous margin of safety for practical applications (Aoki et al., 2023). This exceptional temperature stability allows PPS to be used in extreme areas where other plastics would fail. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee2244d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ee2244d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Chemical resistance and material diversity<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8787d4d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8787d4d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>PPS offers excellent resistance to chemically aggressive substances such as acids, alkalis, solvents and oxidizing media &#8211; even at temperatures of over 200 \u00b0C (Aoki et al., 2023). The plastic is largely inert to UV radiation and has a very low water absorption of less than 0.1 percent, which clearly underlines its dimensional and dimensional stability even under extreme environmental conditions. <\/p><p>In addition to homopolymer PPS, there are numerous variants that are specifically tailored to special requirements. These include copolymers with additional aromatic or sulfone-containing units as well as glass fiber-reinforced PPS compounds, which enable a particularly high mechanical load-bearing capacity. Carbon or mineral fibers are also used for tribological applications, while PPS fiber membranes are used in special filter processes. Commercial grades with different degrees of purity and varying filler content are also available.   <\/p><p>The mechanical load-bearing capacity can be significantly increased by using fillers, with glass fiber-reinforced PPS being the standard for highly stressed components (Aoki et al., 2023).
