Gypsum has a wide variety of uses as a building material. \n\nPlaster is a dry powder that is mixed with water to form a paste, which then hardens. The first step is the formation of a hemihydrate (<sub>CaSO\u2084<\/sub> \u2219<sub>2H\u2082O<\/sub>to<sub>CaSO\u2084<\/sub> \u2219<sub>\u00bdH\u2082O<\/sub>). \n\nA further dehydration reaction forms the anhydrous form ( <sub>CaSO\u2084<\/sub> \u00bd <sub>H\u2082O<\/sub> to <sub>CaSO\u2084<\/sub> ). With an exothermic effect at approximately 340 \u00b0C, the anhydrous form converts to \u03b2-calcium sulfate. The exothermic effect in the curve at approximately 1220 \u00b0C is the conversion of \u03b2-calcium sulfate to \u03b1-calcium sulfate. The sulfate decomposition is evident in a further mass loss at temperatures above 1250 \u00b0C.   \n\nCalcium sulfate is converted to calcium oxide. The melting point of a eutectic mixture of calcium sulfate and calcium oxide is 1380 \u00b0C. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div
